Help! I think I’m a Nationalist (say it softly)
Well he (Seamus Carey) came. He saw Wivey Explorer Scouts putting out the chairs. He even played his Cornish bagpipe. Event number three at the Town Hall with another full house, taking our seats not knowing exactly what to expect of the advertised “controversial sell out comedy show about identity, second homes, xenophobia and (aforementioned) bagpipes.” Was it a pure challenging and entertaining act or just an interactive lesson/workshop (with scones, cream and jam) in exactly what makes the Cornish people wince and… Read more…

A Vampire Visited Upon Wiveliscombe
A horror film is not the standard Sunday afternoon matinée, but neither is it typical to have the composer of the musical score perform live for the audience. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a silent film first screened in 1922. Adapting the story of Dracula, but without the permission of Bram Stoker’s heirs, all copies of the film were meant to be destroyed after court rulings for copyright infringement. But a few prints were saved and the film is… Read more…

We Scaled A Mountain
Last night saw our Town Hall properly open its doors for the first time in over 50 years. And what a night it was. Mountain Music, performed by the phenomenally talented Little Bulb Theatre, tells the story of European settlers setting out to find a new life on foreign shores, taking their musical traditions with them. There their songs and melodies merge with the musical styles of the Cherokee and the African slaves to become the music of Apalachian Mountains… Read more…

Help! I think I’m a Nationalist
Thursday 26th October, 2023. Doors open: 6:30pm, start time: 7:30pm Cornwall is at a tipping point. House prices soar, the population shifts, tensions rise. Some people see it as a separate nation, whilst others see it as a prime holiday destination and playground for the rich. Seamas Carey is confused. He is desperately trying to understand. He’s watched a wave of gentrification sweep through his rural hometown. There’s nowhere to live, yet second homes stand empty. He wishes Cornwall was… Read more…

Nosferatu – a symphony of horrors!
Sunday 22nd October, 2023. 4pm. Doors open 3:30pm Nosferatu (1922) is arguably the film that gave birth to the horror genre. Notable as the first cinematic interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, its combination of expressionistic acting and unforgettable images render it just as powerful and unsettling today as when it first thrilled cinema goers 100 years ago. Chris Green’s new score was commissioned by English Heritage for a live outdoor screening of the film at Dracula’s spiritual home of Whitby… Read more…

The Big Turn On
It was a dark and stormy night but in the doorways and shelters of Wiveliscombe hardy souls emerged to witness an event unseen for many years. Opinions differ as to whether it was the 60s or the 70s but for a long long time (and before Abba, punk rock, alternative comedy and, for most people, even colour television) Wiveliscombe Town Hall has sat silent without power or lights. But those dark years ended at 9:45pm on Wednesday 26th July 2023… Read more…
