This Autumn at the Town Hall & Library

Friday 11 September, 7:30pm When a fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada which was lost with all hands 30 years ago, mysteriously reappears in the old harbour of a bereft Cornish village, for those who remember, it’s surely a sign. The boat must go out to sea again and maybe then the luck of the devastated village will turn. Young father Nick and enigmatic newcomer Liam join captain Murgey, and they head to sea. But when they return, satisfied with their haul, something is amiss – they’ve slipped back in time, and the villagers greet them as if they are the original crew.  Click for tickets or buy in person at the Library or the Post Office.

Sunday 13 September We’ll be opening the Town Hall doors from 12-3pm during the Street Market & Carnival. Come on up for exhibitions, a very unusual photo-booth, films, old photos of Wivey and more. Or just come up for a sit down and a break from the hurly burly down on the street. We look forward to seeing you for what is always a great day in Wivey.

Saturday 19 September, 10am to 6pm The third Wiveliscombe Literary Festival will be taking place at Wiveliscombe Library, Chocolate Books and Wiveliscombe Town Hall.  Speakers and workshops include Michelle Werrett (Exmoor and fly fishing), Oliver Hyams (the Little Angel puppet theatre, London), Emma Bettridge (children and teens), Judy Leigh (cozy crime), Lione Ward and CM Ewan (crime and suspense). Click for more details and tickets. 

Friday 16 October, 7:30pm On a country road in Devon, intensive dairy farmer Derek Banbury is horrified at the “devastation” of  his neighbour’s once productive farm.  Dubbed  a “maverick rewilder” by the media,  Derek Gow is an unrepentant ex-sheep farmer hellbent on turning his land into an oasis for nature.  Shot over three years the film charts the two Derek’s turbulent relationship, as tempers fray, wild animals run amok, and the land is radically transformed. Made by award-winning director James Dawson, it’s a film about land use and farming told by farmers. Blunt, funny and heartwarming in equal measure. Click for tickets.

A stairlift to heaven?Anyone who has visited the Town Hall will know that there is a long flight of 24 steps to be climbed. Obviously not everyone is able to undertake that journey so early next year we’re planning to install a stairlift. To fund it we’re planning to hold a crowdfunder up to the end of the year. We’ll need to raise about £200 for each of the steps which we hope the wonderful people of Wiveliscombe and surrounding area will help us secure. Details of how to donate will be released soon.

We’re still waiting to hear about our application for Listed Building Consent but once we have it we’ll make a start on installing a toilet and bar. For this we’re hoping to make good use of reclaimed / recyled materials and our own labour.
